The Enneads
A New, Unabridged, and Definitive Edition of the Classic Translation by Stephen MacKenna
by Plotinus
Deep religious feeling, breathtaking beauty, vigor, and lucidity make this simply the most inspired English translation of one of the finest products of the human mind. Plotinus (204—270 a.d.) emerges not only as the last great philosopher-sage of the Greek tradition but also—througt his emphasis on the autonomy of the spirit—the dominant precursor of modern times.
Stephen MacKenna prepared just first of the four editions of The Enneads bearing his name. The fourth edition, which has become the text of choice (and is presented here in unabridged form) incorporates thousands of changes made by B.S. Page after MacKenna’s death. Serious students of Plotinus differ, however, on whether many of the substantive variations among these editions are, in fact, improvements. Until now, there has been no convenient way to compare and evaluate them.
The present edition, inspired by Anthony Damiani, calls attention to hundreds of debatable revisions and provides, in unobtrusive endnotes, MacKennas’s own translation. Endnotes also show how other major translators (A.H. Armstrong, K.S. Guthrie, Thomas Taylor) handle these same passages.
